Craig's Daguerreian Registry

Craig's Daguerreian Registry is a unique cross-indexed reference compiling information on daguerreotype practitioners in the United States from 1839 to 1860. It also encompasses allied professions, including casemaking, apparatus and accessory manufacturing and distribution, coloring, and die-engraving.

The Registry is the culmination of over 25 years of research into American photographic history, featuring data compiled from more than 1,500 American city business directories alongside contributions from global collectors, dealers, and researchers. This project remains ongoing, with entries updated as new information emerges.

Key contributors include Ken Appollo, Helder Costa, Larry Gottheim, and

various regional researchers, including Joan Hostetler (Indiana Photographers Project) and James A. Marusek, among many others who provided extensive geographic data.

John Craig Memorial Library

The Photographic Historical Society of Canada hosts the John S. Craig archive of repair manuals, made available through the generosity of his widow, Joyce Krutick Craig.

John Craig (1943–2011) was a prominent photojournalist, photo historian, and daguerreian researcher. A graduate of Wesleyan University, his career included working for the Hartford Courant, serving as a photographer with the Connecticut National Guard, and operating as the first full-time professional dealer in photographica in the United States. Additionally, he was the founding president of the Photographic Historical Society of New England (PHSNE), a regular columnist for Shutterbug magazine, and the recipient of the Daguerreian Society's inaugural Fellowship Award.
