The term "counterpane" has been used to describe a variety of bed coverings. Stenciled counterpanes are rare today, but they were popular throughout New England and the mid-Atlantic states during the early decades of the 19th century. The art of stenciling was used extensively on walls, floors, and furniture. Although some women may have made their own stencils, professionally designed and cut stencils were available by the mid-1830s. This counterpane used 11 different stencils.
